With the new hurricane season just started we have had 4 named storms already and 2 of those have affected Jacksonville directly. If you read the news, watch it on television or even listen to the radio there is a constant stream of information out there to get you prepared for this upcoming season. For our subscribers living here in the Jacksonville, Florida area we recommend bookmarking or adding them to your favorites, depending on which browser you happen to be using. One of them would have to be the City of Jacksonville’s Fire and Rescue Emergency Preparedness page:
http://www.coj.net/departments/fire-and-rescue/emergency-preparedness.aspx . They have an informative page for Jacksonville residents that has whatever is happening in our area and today prominent on that page is Tropical Storm Debbie. They include links to FREE Emergency Preparedness information kits, sign-up for Code Red Alerts and much more. Click on the link and check it out.

Another website that you should bookmark is the National Weather Service. It may have redundant information on it for our area but if you have relatives and friends in other parts of the country or are planning on traveling then this website should be your first stop to keep track of major weather events. http://weather.gov/ This is the U.S. government’s official weather service website that has a wealth of information about weather, storms, historical data and so much more. If you have never visited it before then it should be your next stop.

Finally, for those of us with cellphones, you can get Emergency Messages from you cellphone carrier. The International Association for the Wireless Telecommunications Industry or CTIA has the major wireless carriers listed and a link directly to the Emergency Alerts Sign-up pages with information about what alerts you can sign up for. You can even opt-out of certain alerts to tailor them to your specific needs. And I’m sure there are lots of apps available for Android and I-phone users. Just don’t pay for them if the government is willing to give them to you for FREE.

Just as a side note: We have added a “file upload” feature to our Contact Page in order for you to send us any documents such as volunteer applications or questionnaires, etc. They will go to our main email and distributed to the correct party. This is a convenience feature only. You can still use the Contact Form for regular inquiries without having to upload any files. The upload feature is limited to just documents no picture files.

Reveived in an Email: Dorion – Wins Indoor Rowing event in her category

“Jeff,

I wanted you to know that on Dottie’s birthday she won her category (Lightweight Veteran Women) an International event, the 2012 C.R.A.S.H. Sprints World Indoor Rowing Championship. It was held Sunday, February 19th at the Agganis Arena at Boston University; there were 2,200 competitors from all around the world.

The organization was started in the mid-1970′s by U. S. Olympic and World Team athletes who trained on the Charles River in Boston/Cambridge. The event has grown and changed venues several times. Dottie said she was particularly impressed and inspired by the number of athletes who competed in a category of “Accommodated Rowing” on specially adapted Ergometers – athletes who had suffered wounds and amputations in combat among other challenges.

The Concept-2 Rowing Ergometer is used by athletes at universities, schools, clubs, and national teams around the world. The distance rowed is 2,000 meters and Dottie won her group with a time of 9 minutes 47.4 seconds. The website for the event is: http://www.crash-b.org/web/2012-regatta/

Thanks, Jeff. I know there is (or was) a VIM newsletters or emails that go out that like to reflect notes about Volunteers & Staff and thought you might like to have this information.

February is mixed bag of seasonal weather. Sometimes we have really cold and wet weather and others we have some beautiful sunny weather. The Donna Deegan Marathon for the fight against Breast Cancer is an annual event each February that draws thousands and thousands of people participating in the run, volunteers and spectators. It is a well-run event but like all well attended events it requires lots of volunteers and patience from all the participants. Don’t forget to take your time, plan to be at all the events early and of course, parking will always be an issue.

Become a Breast Cancer Marathon Race Crew Volunteer has all the information for becoming a volunteer and having a good time while helping a good cause. You will even get some great stuff for participating. It is a huge event with lots of people coming from all over the U.S. and some are even from other countries. The events start on Wednesday, February 8th to Sunday, February 12th. There are lots of events going on that needs volunteers not just for the race day on Saturday.

Check it Out!

For those of you who do not qualify for healthcare help here at VIM-Jax because you make too much money you might want to try the federal government program that each state must administer called the Pre-existing Condition Insurance Program. Yes, there are some requirements before you can apply but if you meet them it will allow you a chance to get insurance. Check out the website: https://www.pcip.gov/ Read through the website and then go to the state page to be taken to your state’s insurance page.

For Florida State Plans page go to: https://www.pcip.gov/StatePlans.html They have a listing for Florida with costs. Sadly, the “Cover Florida” guaranteed insurance coverage program was disbanded due to overuse. So, get out there and find yourself some insurance coverage.
